Wireless temperature probe
THE MISSION
This telematics specialist contacted Newsteo in 2007 (through its former French corporation, Elomobile), with the goal of supplying its customers with a new service: a solution for monitoring the temperature of their refrigerated lorries in real-time.
A study done by the French newspaper, Les Échos indicates that temperature-controlled road haulage is one of the most dynamic markets in logistics, with growth of +9% / year.

DEVELOPMENT
The teams at Newsteo and Vehco worked in synergy to develop a tailor-made solution for Vehco, as a complement to Newsteo’s standard catalogue. This was imperative, in fact, to meet the technical performance requirements — all while limiting the cost of the solution.
- The Newsteo radio receiver is integrated into the Vehco on-board computer. It is delivered by Newsteo in the form of an electronic board, without a housing
- A specific temperature probe has been developed and is placed in the lorry’s refrigerated trailer.
The temperature probe takes temperature readings every 5 minutes.
This reading is transmitted to the Vehco on-board computer, which retransmits it via 3G-4G to the back office.
The traceability of the cold chain is thus ensured all throughout the haulage and in the event of a problem, the fleet supervisor and the driver can be alerted instantaneously.
Moreover, the temperature probe also serves to identify the trailer and enables the fleet manager to know which tractor is associated with which trailer.
TECHNICAL RESULTS
The technical performance of this probe are impressive :
An autonomy of 4 years with an operating temperature ranging from -30°C to +72°C
IP68 Protection rating
Resistant to high pressure cleaning of the trailer
Radio Communication is efficient up to the lorry cab, even when the lorry is loaded, despite framework which is sometimes made of stainless steel and with loaded pallets
EN 12830 Certification. The European standard EN 12830 standardises operation of Temperature recorders for transport, storage and distribution of heat-sensitive merchandise.
