Berry Global is an American plastics company specialized in packaging films but also in technical nonwovens such as surgical drapes, surgical masks or tape for submarine cables.
The company’s strategy integrates an ecological aspect with the will to reduce by 3% per year the energy consumption of the sites.

THE TASK
Berry Global in Bailleul France (59) contacted Newsteo to set up an IoT system for remote reading of electricity, gas and water meters.
The objective? To draw up a consumption report for each piece of equipment in real time in order to take action.
Before that, consumption was manually read only once a month.
The team then set up Newsteo’s Webmonitor software using all its features and in particular the “Monitored Unit” option which allows to include in the interface calculations based on the meter readings.
Thus, the software displays not only the instantaneous meter reading but also the consumption over 24 hours and the consumption over 1 month.
RESULTS
- As soon as the plant was equipped, the maintenance team was able to detect and remedy abnormal water consumption, saving 10m3 of water every 24 hours.
- The monitoring system also allowed the detection of an overconsumption of the compressors which, once resolved, resulted in electricity savings.
- With one month’s hindsight, users were able to set up Webmonitor-based alert systems, based on hourly consumption, to be informed almost immediately of any abnormal consumption and to remedy it as soon as possible.
By projecting the savings over 1 year, the acquisition of the Newsteo supervision system has been economically profitable, in addition to the purely ecological objective.
AND AFTERWARDS
Berry Global is now going to equip its raw material storage tanks, to follow more easily the daily consumption and optimize its supplies.
